How To Make French Toast by Mr. Wilson

Comedian Steven Wright said, “I went to a restaurant that serves ‘breakfast any time’. So I ordered French Toast during the Renaissance.” French toast has become a popular breakfast dish in America. Ironically, today’s French toast does not match it’s origin in France. In France, French toast is referred to as “pain perdu” which translated means “lost bread.” This type of bread was hard and stale as poor French families had to use the bread to save money, so they soaked it in eggs and milk before frying it. Thankfully, French toast has improved, and is delicious if prepared correctly. Making French toast involves buying the right ingredients, preparing to cook, and executing the recipe.

First, potential French toast lovers need to buy the right ingredients. Those ingredients include the following: bread, eggs, butter, cinnamon, sugar, syrup, and milk. Any type of sliced bread should be sufficient for this recipe. However, the eggs need to be free of any strange odors, discoloring, or cracks. Inspect the eggs carefully before purchasing. Regarding the butter and milk, healthier options exist with almond or soy milk and unsalted organic butter. The cinnamon, sugar, and syrup are sweeteners that enhance the taste of the French toast. Buying these ingredients are necessary for a delicious meal of French toast.

Second, after buying the right ingredients, the proper preparations need to occur. For example, bacteria like E.coli, salmonella, mold live in kitchens across the country according to a CBS News report titled “Where are germs hiding in your kitchen?” According to the report, one in six Americans get sick from a food borne illness. Therefore, it’s important that hands are properly washed with warm water and soap for at least thirty seconds. Any kitchen utensils used such as skillets, bowls, spoons, and forks should be thoroughly washed with dish detergent before using. Once everything has been cleaned, a tablespoon of butter should be melted in a standard non-stick skillet over medium heat. Preparing the kitchen before cooking will prevent potential sickness and illness.

Finally, once the kitchen and the cook’s hands have been cleaned, the eggs should be cracked into a bowl. The eggs should be mixed with cinnamon (four teaspoons), sugar (one tablespoon), and milk (one cup). After mixing these ingredients into a smooth blend, dip the sliced bread into the mixture. Place the mixture into the heated skillet. Turn each side once brown.

Although today’s version of French toast does not involve poor French families or stale bread, it is a delicious treat that is easy to prepare. Buying the right ingredients, preparing to cook, and executing the recipe will lead to a breakfast made for royalty.
